Educational Programs Parades
Through Living
History our members present what it was like to be a soldier fighting for the Union
during the American Civil War (1861-1865), or a civilian sustaining the Homefront.
Adults and children can see, hear, touch, smell and experience what was previously only
available from printed text and Hollywood movies. More importantly, they can ask
questions and engage 19th century military and civilian personnel in conversation.
The
historical Association has presented programs to public schools and colleges, libraries,
historical societies, and other interested groups (references available upon request). We
participate in various parades including; Memorial Day, Independence Day, Remembrance Day
and St. Patrick's Day (5th Avenue, NYC). Training camps are set up on the Old
Bethpage Village Plains in the Spring and late Summer. Every Fall, Company H portrays a
local GAR Post at the Nassau County Long Island Fair (circa 1874)

Programs are available in several
formats:
Indoor Presentation - Uniformed display and demonstration accompanied by
question and answer period. A minimum of three (3) uniformed soldiers are present.
Outdoor Presentation - Same content as an Indoor Presentation with the
addition of an outdoor encampment (tents, camp fire, cooking, musket firing
demonstration). A minimum of three (3) uniformed soldiers are present.
Parade - Six (6) or more uniformed soldiers present, civilians as
available.
Additional soldiers or period dressed
civilians can be added to programs upon request and availability (additional donations may
apply). We also have a fife and drum corp that is available for select presentations.
Program content can be customized upon
request. All suggested donations are subject to revision based upon requests for program
customization. All program donations collected are used for Association operating
expenses, equipment purchase and the preservation of Civil War battlefields, monuments and
history.
Please support our efforts to preserve
this part of Long Island's and America's history. History must be preserved for
future generations and not be forgotten.
